Mommy, Why Is Your Hair Pink? written by Shannon Bahrke Happe and illustrated by Ingrid Ochoa tells the story of a young girl who dreamed big dreams and wanted to do so much. She loved doing so many things but, best of all, she loved sports. She wanted to be the best skier in the world and dreamed of competing in the Olympic Games. Wow, that’s a very big dream for a little girl! But the only thing that made her afraid was that she was the only girl, competing against boys, and she needed to show the world that she was just as fast and as strong as them. So, she came up with a unique idea – adding a touch of pink to her gear to give her that extra edge of pink girl power! Then the day came when her dreams materialized, and she was going to compete for that Olympic medal. But was she good enough? And how could she add that touch of pink girl power to give her the confidence she needed? Years later, her own daughter asks her, “Mommy, why is your hair pink?”
I just loved this wonderful, positive, moving story that will fill young girl readers with confidence in their own unique skills and worth. The illustrations are just enchanting, filled with magic, sparkles, whimsy, and lots of pink! As a little girl, the author found the key to what made her feel confident and filled with optimism and self-belief, and she passes the message along to her own daughter, and to other young readers through this story. There is such a sense of joy as the little girl, now grown up with her own daughter, explains how the deep loving light within us makes our dreams come true. This is a wonderful message for youngsters who may feel they are not good enough, they are not ‘like everyone else,’ and who may need to discover how worthy they are and how valuable they are to the world and those that love them. This is a book young readers will adore, and perhaps the adult reading it with them will rediscover their own special light within.
